Back to the Future…?

…I certainly don’t want to go there!

A friend e-mailed a few vintage advertisements to us to show how times have changed. This is the country our esteemed TP/GOPers want us to go “back” to;  I certainly don’t. This is their wonderful, myopic  vision of what they want to return to. When men were men and women knew their place. The halcyon days of yore. When wifey stayed home and cleaned the house spotless, took care of the kids, and greeted hubby all dressed up and looking radiant in her frilly apron and high heels. Ready to grant hubby’s every whim!  Dinner on the table and everything waiting just for him. Give me a break! These households only existed in the minds of Madison Ave. ad agencies and ‘50’s domestic comedies. “Father Knows Best” or “Leave it to Beaver”, anyone? The condescending chauvinistic attitude was still a prominent force, however. Even then, such idealism was fantasy. Ask some female senior citizen, what she thought of the ‘50’s.

See what I mean…?

More for your money…

Had enough yet?

Still not enough? “Merry Christmas Honey!”

One more for the road…

Of course, this is only one example of their illusory ideas. Throw in the old days of unionless  workers, and even children working for pennies on the dollars the bosses made. The inequality of incomes, no safety nets, soup kitchens, people selling apples for a few cents to buy bread for a starving family. All the “good” memories of times past. Ah, yes…The “impenetrable bubble”  the TP/GOPers are surrounded by.

May I interject a thought here?…

On the same subject “Job Creators”…

They’re working very hard to pull us back and prevent progress. To paraphrase an old saw “We don’ need no stinkin’ safety nets”. R-i-i-i-ght!  We also don’t need human rights, women’s health care choices, contraception, LGBT rights, a good public education system and college availability for all who want it, especially in science and math (we’re in 27th place on this, I believe, just below Hungary).

One possible explanation for why we’re so far down on math and especially science…

They probably long for “The Old Kentucky Home”, before MLK and the Civil Rights Movement. Think I’m exaggerating? Can you explain the obvious hatred and obstructionism, not to mention out and out lies about our duly elected POTUS? The first day President Obama  got into office, the “loyal opposition”,  said they must make sure he’s only a one term president. Did you notice the nasty smirk on McConnell’s face, as he intoned the words?

Is the obstructionism merely political or is there much more to this? I think the latter. Did you know they had a special meeting on the night of Obama’s inauguration? Did you know it was a conference by about 15 of the top TP/GOPers to destroy Obama’s first term in any way they could?  There’s a lot more to the TP/GOPers whine about  what the country used to be, way back before any progressive ideas sneaked in. Don’t forget the “birthers” still trying to discredit the “other” POTUS. How dare he! Do you recall any past president having to prove his birth record? I think any aware individual can understand the real meaning of the  TP/GOPer’s code.

Latest info on this debacle…The SCOTUS just denied an appeal to allow the continuation of the “birthers” suit against the president.

They just don’t wear sheets anymore…!

Take a good look at the ‘20’s, prohibition, the depression, even the ‘40’s through our hopefully more enlightened eyes of the 21st century. Do you get my drift? Can you understand the portents of the 21st century and its importance in the world?  Which makes more sense today, falling back into the past stagnation or progressing with an eye to the actualized future?

Some memories of the “glorious” past…

Depression era bread and coffee line

A depression era soup kitchen line, thanks to Al Capone. Would you believe he  actually set up several of them?

There was no such thing as workman’s comp then…

More warm memories of times past…”The Grapes of Wrath” were not all that fictional. A migrant worker family of the era…

There are some who would like to undo civil rights and desegregation altogether and some who would turn our country into an extension of their religious beliefs and an oligarchy. It’s up to us; all of us, to continue to move  towards a  future that is truly enlightened and progressive.

Some visuals for your entertainment and enlightenment, I hope…

A large part of the problem …

The continuing story…

Chemotherapy is no Walk in the Park…

Been a bit out of sync. I’m undergoing chemo for Lymphoma. I just thought I’d make a few remarks.  I’m certain I’ll come out OK. But it’s a tough way to go. I expect to continue the blog as I have been. Have no fear I’ve got lots of p0sts waiting in the wings, ready to go. You’ll hardly notice the difference.

Over and out for now… if anyone is interested…

Lionizing Ronald Reagan

They’ve named aircraft carriers, airports, and all sorts of thing after him. You’d think he was another Lincoln or Washington. They speak of him in tones of awe! Some wanted him on Mt. Rushmore!  They want his likeness on a bill! They’ve just erected a statue of him in front of the US Embassy in Grosvenor Square in London! Doesn’t Ronald Reagan sound like a genuine heroic figure? They credit him with the downfall of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall!  The fact is that the Soviet Union collapsed under its own mismanagement of financial and political balance. Unfortunately it’s eerily similar to what’s been happening in America recently.  Best president ever? Well, here are just some of the facts:

Reagan’s Legacy;

1) Increased National Debt 189% ($998 billion to $2.6 trillion)
2) Converted millions of high paying union jobs into low paying non-union jobs.
3) Cut spending on healthcare leaving ex-servicemen, disabled people,
and old without support to rot on streets.
4) Doubled the number of poor in the country.
5) Turned US from major exporter of manufactured goods to the major
importer of goods.
6) Turned US from net importer of raw natural resources into nation
that exported raw natural resources
7) Funded terrorists and tried to trade arms for hostages.
8) Funded and aided Saddam with WMD.
9) Reagan encouraged corruption, allowing companies to sell $25
toilet seats to the military for $360 and $8 hammers for $120.
10) Reagan cut income taxes on working class but increased payroll
taxes and mandated contributions to Medicare and Social Security
did so in a way that top 1% paid 15% less than they did
before by limiting deductions on first $61,000 but the working poorest
had theirs increased 15%.
11) Reagan took a staggering 436 vacation days at his ranch in  8 years.
12) Allowed Rupert Murdoch to circumvent immigration laws to purchaseAmerican media sources

13) Ignored AIDS epidemic because it affected Them People.

14) Encouraged the Evangelicals to become Political and Partisan.
15) Cutting benefits for those with mental illness who were tossed from
psych hospitals and turned to living out on the streets!
16) Started endless vacuum of federal dollars further increasing
national debt for wife’s pet project “War on Drugs.”

(kimbanyc-HuffPo poster)

More fun with Reagan:

Interesting, you could not refute one thing kimbanyc stated. Here are some more facts about Reagan He granted residency to millions of undocumented immigrants. He raised taxes 11 times. Reagan cut funds to cities and slashed federal housing programs which more than doubled the country’s homeless population. He deregulated the savings and loan industry (even the Koch brothers Cato Institute admits that was a failure). Income of the top 1% increased by 55 percent. Bottom 40% of households payed out more in federal taxes in 1988 than they did in 1980. Called apartheid in South Africa “strategically essential to the free world in its production of minerals” and fought Congressional efforts to place sanctions on the apartheid government. Senate Republicans helped override his veto of anti-apartheid legislation. Sold arms to Iran to fund the contras in Nicaragua and armed and backed Saddam Hussein. Funded the Islamist militants in Afghanistan and Pakistan (thank the Straussians for that in his administration). He had opposed the 1965 Voting Rights Act saying it was humiliating to the South. More than a dozen administration officials had to resign following revelation of Iran-Contra and 20 high level EPA officials were forced to resign. More than 50 officials at the Defense Department and private contractors were convicted of rigging bids and falsifying quality control tests. Yes, he is opposite of the leader we have now. And his approval rating after two years in office was lower.

(Okiemama-HuffPo poster)

I greatly appreciate my fellow HuffPo posters. So often they hit the nail right on the head. Spot on comments.

As you can see we have here a classic case of cognizant dissonance. Reagan is a fabricated heroic figure much like Paul Bunyan or Hercules. The hero Reagan only exists in the nebulous nether world of fevered imagination and a longing to seem as if the GOPers actually have something worthwhile to expound upon. Of course, as they try to whitewash the “reign” of “W” and his policies that have nearly destroyed our country and economy, you can see how Reagan has been transformed; metamorphosed into ”Super Ronnie”! In a few years, who knows? “W-Man”?

The imaginary Reagan is so much more interesting than the real one. Facts, however, don’t lie. The facts on Reagan are just that. There are actual records of his “accomplishments”, written, videos, broadcasts, etc. They are there and undeniably true. As the line says “you can’t handle the truth”; which I am directing to the Reaganites.

So I say the lionizing of Ronald Reagan is a totally undeserved one, made of whole cloth. I think his policies make him one of the worst presidents we have had the misfortune to vote into office. A couple of things I recall about Reagan. He busted the PATCO union, setting the precedent for the GOPers newly developed interest in doing the same for thousands of union members.  The unions are desperately fighting today to preserve their rights in the midst of some of the worst unemployment, ever!. He was also considering ketchup as a vegetable for school lunches, to cut costs! Today the GOPers are trying to cut nutrition and health programs for the underprivileged to pare the budget! You see the progression? Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile!

This basically second class movie actor and TV emcee, somehow has become the greatest president? Surely you jest! Read the facts, look at the evidence. Don’t fall for “a lie repeated often enough becomes the truth”. Those who have their logic and reason screwed on tightly, know the difference between reality and fantasy. Reagan’s policies started us on this long, painfully slow decline. Remember “Reaganomics”? Many of the things he set in motion are at fault for what we are facing now.  Add the “W” factor and there’s really a formula for disaster. That formula is taking its toll, today, as we struggle to regain our once solid foothold and world reputation. Thank you so much President Reagan; but let’s not forget George II, and his magic WMD’s in Iraq, and his distinguished court of Sirs Cheney, Rove and Rumsfeld, and Lady Rice. Don’t we just love ‘em?

A couple of the milder contemporary (to Reagan’s term) and negative opinions:

Not all bonbons and roses, was it?

As you can see, “Reaganomics” started the whole “trickle down” system as well. There were concerns even then. Aren’t you delighted? Part of his legacy is the economic mess we’re in today. It didn’t work then; it’s not working now, and won’t work in the future either!

They continue to regard him as a model of what the presidency should be. They cannot recognize what a flawed, less than competent figurehead he really was. I’m talking about the incompetence and failures of his policies, during his two terms; foreign, economic and social. He was then, and remains now an anomaly of smoke and mirrors; not the great statesman and policymaker at all, but a greatly overrated personality. Little more to distinguish him from many others, except he once was a Hollywood personality. Without the Hollywood star makers, he would just have been another ordinary politician. Unfortunately, the remaining stardust that clung to him, gave him a sparkle and glitz, mistaken for gravitas that was totally undeserved.

The London Statue…

Doesn’t he look distinguished?

May I also bring to your attention…

A statue of Andy Gump, a character from a Cartoon. This is in Lake Geneva WI, in Flat Iron Park!…

And he-e-e-e-r-r-es Popeye! A statue erected in Alma, AR, which considers itself the spinach capital of the country!…

By the way this is part of a charming, little park, I understand, with a related mural in the background somewhere, dedicated to the subjects.

I will leave it to your imagination as to why I put the above cartoon characters here!

Are We Still a “Free” Country?

How “free” are we now, exactly?

I’m feeling more and more like I fell into a parallel universe, somehow. When I note what has been happening in America of late, I find it unbelievable. I never in a million years thought I’d see politicians actually trying to destroy our hard- fought for labor unions, and dismantling them.  To see them attempt to take away the safety nets for those in need in favor to the corporations and wealthy while destroying our own middle class. I am terrified for women’s rights, as well. The pols who are valiantly attempting to roll back women’s advances, Roe v. Wade, the right to choose their own lifestyle, I’m aghast! I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING HERE IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY!

The infusion of Christianocratic Fascism is frightening. We are being shoved closer and closer to the edge of the cliff. The separation of church and state so vital to our free country, is being jeopardized. One of the biggest enemies of freedom is apathy. Where are the objectors to this? Where are the protestors against ramrodding us into a Theocracy? Who’s minding the store?

What of the “Patriot Act”? What’s so patriotic about restricting our own free access to our own country? I, personally, have seen evidence of how much this has changed us. Now, we are fearful if anyone even wants to take a snapshot. Not of some restricted area; but some public places!

Yes, that’s happened twice, at least, to a friend who likes to take snapshots. Here in Chicago, for instance, those in the area know of the Cumberland Terminal.  A unique looking newer el, subway and bus terminal. Wanting to take some random shots of this interesting construction, my friend was stopped, by security, saying that permission was needed by the management for that! In a public place! Another time, taking photos of a local hospital! One which had some recent architectural additions that were very interesting. While taking shots in the parking lot, he was stopped by a security guard and asked for his ID! In a public parking lot on public grounds at a local hospital!

I can’t help wondering if Gore hadn’t been chiseled out of a win for president, by the SCOTUS cabal, if 9/11 would even have happened, let alone the subsequent deterioration of our freedoms. Now we even find it acceptable to be virtually strip-searched by the TSA just to get on a plane. We have been selectively groped by TSA reps, in ways that would previously have been considered assault! Yet, we blithely accept this as NORMAL? The enemies of freedom didn’t need to nuke us, they’re well on the way to their objective. They have immutably changed our way of life and our country, without needing any more weapons.

Where once we had free access across our borders to our neighbors, now we need passports? To make sure of what? Any tourist might be a terrorist? Are travelers now guilty of terrorism unless proven innocent? What sense does that make? Illegal immigrants? What Canadian in their right mind would want to sneak INTO the USA these days? Even our Southern border immigrants are returning to their countries because of the climate of the economy. How did we manage to have our borders open, until now?

“Post 9/11”?  Way before 9/11, Reagan and his band of merry men decided we must ALL have Social Security numbers from the time we were born! What payroll deductions did a newborn suddenly acquire? That was necessary, because…? These things have been gradually creeping into our society. Making us less and less the “Free Country” of our past.  I believe it was Ben Franklin who said something about “Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither”.

Do We Need a Third Party?

Where Are You, Dems?

If Obama caves in on Social Security, which we all paid for, Medicare which also was deducted from our pay, and Medicaid for the really needy ones so they can have  health  care access, perhaps we should draft some real progressive for 2012. I can think of three possibilities immediately; Bernie Sanders, Sherrod Brown and Alan Grayson. Too bad about Weiner  though, he “coulda been a contender”. With this Debit Limit Raising business, and the machinations both parties are going through, I fear for those safety nets, that are so important, especially now, with this economy.

So many people are depending on the so-called “Entitlements” for the barest of sustenance; food stamps, child nutrition, Education, so much depends on the government taking care of its neediest and most necessary assistance and services. Most who need them are not looking for a handout, but a helping hand; a BIG difference there. How many people are out of work so long they’ve used up what they were saving for a rainy day? I’m sure they weren’t expecting a deluge!

Yet the TP/GOPers are hell-bent on destroying them, and it seems as though the DEMs are just lying back and submitting to the bullies. Witness the latest debacle of the “so-called” debt limit raising battle. Even Boehner says he got 98% of what HE wanted! The DEMS got 2%? and they’re bragging about a succesful bi-partisan effort? Really? Whatever happened to “Shared Sacrifice”? Whatever happened to the abs0lute need for revenue sources?

The TP/GOPers fawning all over their corporate masters and wealthy overlords protecting the wealthiest 2% at the expense of the other 98% of our citizens. The TP/GOPers mantra of no new taxes, ever, is destroying us from within. Soon the US will just be another Banana Republic, with a few wealthy, and the rest, poor underlings at the mercy of the corporate and wealthy, greedy overlords!

The citizens are very angry at the government’s inaction, these days, as well as some actions they’ve perpetrated; especially the TP/GOPers. Why do the DEMs insist on bending over backwards to be bi-partisan? The TP/GOPers are bullying the DEMs and the DEMs are just letting them.

Isn’t there some way to find some Progressives with a spine? There just aren’t enough in our congress. Surely there must be some more Libs to stem the tide. Perhaps it is about time to start a third, truly Progressive party, with true Progressive Liberals. I know they’re trying to start a kind of ground swell for it. I saw Ralph Nader on TV the other night discussing just that subject. There actually is a start of a movement in that direction. “The Coffee Party” perhaps?

I voted for Obama. I thought he was one of the most intelligent presidential choices I’ve seen. I thought surely he’d be the one, to help right the damage done by “W”, et al. Unfortunately, we are still suffering under that yoke. If he’s the only choice, I’ll vote, albeit reluctantly, for him. I know he’s better than the TP/GOPers that have plagued us of late. But where is the best we can get?

Is there a real choice somewhere out there that will be the wisest and most effective leader, or is that just an empty fantasy?  I don’t know.  Obama has accomplished some things, but is woefully short of the mark I voted him in for. Is there any hope, or does Washington warp even the best of them?
